Awaiyr Overview

Awaiyr, formerly known as the American Center for Intellectual and Diverse Disorders (ACIDD), was founded in 2013 by Joseph Mathew, Ph.D., as part of a long-standing vision to transform mental health and disability services in the United States and beyond.

Dr. Mathew’s work in this field spans more than three decades, including 20 years of leadership at the Center for Social Change (CSC), a Maryland nonprofit serving individuals with developmental disabilities. Through this experience, he recognized a critical gap in care for individuals living with both intellectual disabilities and serious mental illness—often referred to as “the other dual diagnosis.”

In response to this need, ACIDD Maryland was established to advance recovery, protect dignity, and create life-changing opportunities for people facing complex mental health and developmental challenges. The organization launched community-based services including the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (PRP), Mental Health Vocational Program (MHVP), residential supports, Community Development Services (CDS), Day Habilitation (DH), Employment Services, and Personal Support Services.

Over the years, ACIDD Maryland became recognized for excellence, accountability, and person-centered care. All programs earned accreditation through CARF International until operations were strategically adjusted during the COVID-19 pandemic to prioritize health, safety, and service continuity.

As the mission deepened, the organization expanded beyond traditional clinical services. A new vision emerged—one centered on emotional resilience, trauma-informed healing, community restoration, and broader mental wellness advocacy. This transformation led to the evolution of ACIDD into Awaiyr.

At the center of this new chapter is the ACIDD Wellness Institute, now the flagship healing program of Awaiyr. Through nature-based wellness, restorative education, workshops, and trauma-informed programs, the Institute supports individuals, families, and communities seeking healing and long-term growth.

Today, Awaiyr stands as the next chapter of a powerful legacy—honoring the foundations of ACIDD while embracing a future rooted in compassion, innovation, inclusion, and hope. Guided by an experienced voluntary Board of Directors and supported by its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, Awaiyr remains committed to transforming lives and strengthening communities through holistic, person-centered care.
